How Social Relationships Boost a Writer's Confidence

Updated: Jun 18

Writers are social beings.

No matter how introvert you claim to be, you need other people to grow your career as a writer.

You can’t just stay inside your room forever and be alone while writing!

Let us not forget that writing is a form of social activity. It is a way of communicating a person’s ideas and thoughts into a written form.

When we write, we always have the readers or audience in mind, which is also another important element for an activity to be considered social.

Why Social Relationships Are Crucial to Writers

Social relationships are crucial to writers. This is true especially these days when anxiety and depression continue to plague a lot of people, anywhere in the world, no matter their profession.

Being able to go out and communicate with friends will help writers gain new perspectives. The things that they learn from socializing help them become better and more confident writers.

What is a writer's role in society?

Time and again we have been told that writers possess the power to inspire, inform and move people to action. Their ability to put words together enables them to shed light on different issues in society.

How they develop their written piece largely influences people’s thoughts, emotions and even decisions. Thus, their ability as well to create healthy social relationships is also of great significance to their work as writers.

How does society influence a writer?

Everything that happens in the society, regardless of whoever initiated it and whoever is involved in it, can directly and indirectly impact a writer’s view of the world around him or her.

The society in which a writer lives helps shape his capabilities as a writer. In most cases, every written content that a writer produces is often a reflection of his perception of the world around him.

Whether one will become a novelist, a playwright, a poet, an ebook writer - any written endeavor will most likely be influenced by the people, things and events in a writer’s society.

But, how do these social relationships boost a writer’s confidence? Keep reading.

How Social Relationships Boost a Writer’s Confidence

Social relationships provide external validation.

External validation, especially if it comes from the right people can do wonders in boosting your confidence as a writer.

Consider joining groups meant for writers. Make friends with people who are also into writing. Being exposed to fellow writers will increase your chances of receiving acknowledgements and recognition from them.

Imagine having someone else who will do the introductions on your behalf. Yes, this is very much possible if you just continue to blend and socialize with them on a regular basis.

Being with a social circle that knows a lot about the thing that you love doing can be so fulfilling. You can freely exchange opinions. What’s beautiful about being in these social groups is the fact that their opinions do matter a lot.

They certainly know what you’re doing, that's why their opinions become valuable for your ability to grow as a writer.

Besides, the encouragement you get from fellow writers is tantamount to being surrounded with mentors whose lessons are too valuable to be received for no fee at all.

The words that they say about your writing and the written world in general, will help you grow and develop into one great writer someday.

Social relationships give you a sense of belongingness.

Knowing that you have a group of friends can bring about happiness that can serve as your inspiration. Even more so if these groups of friends are also writers who understand exactly what you’ve been going through.

Although having a group of supportive friends and family members are important to your career as a writer. But, having friends who are also writers provides a different level of belongingness.

It is so wonderful to know that you have people around you who do not need elaborate explanations about your thoughts and feelings.

When everyone else around you becomes noisy and they have different opinions about your writing, you know exactly whom to listen to.

You do not have to listen to everyone. You just have to listen to those people who have the power to say yes and help you become a better writer.

Always remember that when many people try to pull you down, never let those who do not have the power to say yes, to tell you that you cannot do it.

When confusion and uncertainty rears its ugly head, remind yourself of where you belong. Then, from there start mustering your courage and pave the way for a better and more confident you.

Social relationships help you become more receptive to feedback.

When you join groups meant for writers or any other social communities you will be exposed to different types of writers.

These people may have different personalities and perceptions about the written world. But they have all come together because they share the same passion for writing.

This kind of exposure gives you plenty of opportunities to receive feedback, positive and negative comments and acknowledgements. The more you spend time with fellow writers you will eventually get used to receiving even the most negative feedback about your writing.

As a result, you will improve your writing skills, while you also gain more confidence about yourself.

Keep in mind that it would be difficult to achieve success without people around you. You need to socialize not just because you need to find someone to help you publish your written output.

You need socialization to be able to maintain your mental health and ensure your life remains normal. It can be so hard to lead a normal life during the early stages of your writing career.

One reason for this is the fact that writing won’t be financially productive in the beginning. So, instead of letting yourself become stuck in the process of writing while worrying about your finances, go out and socialize.

The presence of friends and fellow writers help you boost your confidence despite the fact that you are still uncertain about your future as a writer.

If you value the benefits of socialization, you will continue to gain inspiration for your work. Not to mention the fact that it will keep the signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression at bay.

The more you socialize, the more you become strong against rejections. This strengthens your writing endurance and boosts your confidence as  a writer.

Conclusion:

Does social relationships boost a writer’s confidence? The answer is a resounding yes.

Being around people who love you, share your passion for writing leads you to become the kind of person who knows how to take criticism and make it work in a way that will take your writing skills to a whole new level.
